Essential Oil Safety

• KEEP ALL ESSENTIAL OILS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!

• Treat essential oils as if they are medicine,

They are poison in unknowing Hands!

• Do not take internally.

• If ingested, call your local poison control center, or call 1-800-222-1222. This number will route your call to the poison center in your area.

• Never use essential oils undiluted on skin, with the occasional exception of Lavender and Tea Tree Oils and these should never be applied neat (undiluted) to broken skin, always dilute with a carrier oil!

• Keep essential oils away from open flame and heat sources.
In the case of a diffuser, make sure to place it in a safe location out of reach of children and pets.

• Do not use essential oils in eyes or in the eye area.

• If essential oil does come in contact with eye(s), flush with water or full milk and repeat. Seek medical attention if stinging lasts longer than 10 minutes.

• Store all citrus, pine, and lavender oils in the refrigerator when possible: This will lengthen their shelf life.

After one year, expressed citrus oils (if properly stored) should not be  used for skin applications.

Lavender and Pine essential oils (if properly stored) will be safe for up to two years. After these time periods one should not use these oils for skin applications.

• The Lily Cupboard’s Bergamot Essential Oil is not FCF (furocoumarin free) or bergapten free and because of this, is a powerful photo sensitizer.

This means that you can be burned if you are exposed to ultraviolet light after applying bergamot essential oil to the skin. It is safest when used in a diffuser. However, if you are going to use it in a skin application, be sure to dilute in excess for skin applications including baths, bath salts, lotions, salves, and massage oils when using Bergamot Essential Oil. Do not expose skin to ultraviolet rays for at least 12 hours after application of Bergamot Essential Oil (properly diluted of course!) and at least four hours after application of any citrus essential oil.

Ultra Violet rays are present in overcast conditions and in tanning beds.

• Consult a Medical Professional or Licensed Naturopath for instructions in the use of essential oils during Pregnancy and/or if taking prescription drugs or homeopathic remedies.

• Perform a skin patch test if prone to sensitivities (Dilute essential oil with carrier oil for this).

• Educate yourself and your family in the proper use and safety of essential oils!

Please contact The Lily Cupboard on the contact page of the site with any further questions regarding the safety of essential oils.
